“Burma Shave” Road Signs
Description1. Contest • Conducted contest on KLKS radio to create “Burma Shave” style slogans with the theme of stopping aquatic hitchhikers for road signs in Fifty Lakes. • Broadcasted 60 commercials (1 minute each) and 5 live interviews (5 minutes each) over a period of 10 days. • Targeted audience of residents and visitors in the Brainerd Lakes area (60,000 residents in listening area). • Publicized contest by sending e-mail messages to lake associations, calling 7 area high schools, posting contest details on radio station’s website and sending news release concerning the contest and contest winners to 9 regional newspapers (all nine published the story). • Received outstanding response, including 420 slogans. Three high school classes participated. 2. Burma Shave Signs • Installed 6 signs with a Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers slogan along Highway #1 in Fifty Lakes. • Targeted residents and visitors to Fifty Lakes and Whitefish Chain of lakes. • Received favorable response from landowners, city officials and residents (city council indicated it would approve additional sign locations.
