Restoring a Remnant Big Woods Forest

Description

Lake Rebecca Park Reserve is located near the center of what was once a large expanse of mesic hardwood forest, but in Hennepin County only about 1% of the original Big Woods forest acreage remains. Phase I of this project will address some of the major structural issues that are affecting the long-term viability of these forests. This long-term project will remove and control invasive species over a roughly 275 acre area, and create an older, less fragmented hardwood forest. It will also attempt to address the lack of native species regeneration found in much of the understory of these forests via stand manipulations & plantings. A mapping and vegetation sampling portion of the grant is going to be an on-the-ground data collection based on two established protocols.
