Gateway North Forest & Prairie Restoration

Description

We plan to enhance 14.5 acres of natural area within a 43-acre park owned by the City of Cottage Grove. This project represents Phase 2 of a larger restoration project area containing about 6.4 acres of dry bedrock bluff prairie, an uncommon and vulnerable plant community in the region. Also found within the project area are 2.5 acres of oak woodland and 2.3 acres of oak forest. The prairie is badly overgrown with woody brush, much of it being exotic. We propose to remove the brush, control the re-sprouts and herbaceous weeds, conduct prescribed burns, and seed with a local ecotype seed mix to enhance and restore the site.
