Water shield is an aquatic plant that grows in quiet shallow water, mostly in northern lakes. It has small oval leaves that float on the surface. It looks something like a small water lilly, but the leaves don't have a notch on the margin, and the stem attaches at the center of the leaf rather than along the edge.
